I don’t think I remember where the idea initially came from. I guess after five years of traveling home to visit family and friends I felt an urge to explore places I hadn’t seen before. Curiosity about my country of residence fed by late night road movies and books of all kinds had grown into a desire to go see for myself.

Looking at a map one day I remember thinking: If I could - where would I go? I’ve traveled the West and most of the East coast. Two years of living in the Midwest I’d call sufficient. And for some reason ‘South’ always sounds more appealing to me than ‘North’ when I think of vacation.

Two weeks on the road have changed my perspective on things. Maybe I got an inch or two closer at grasping the vast beauty of this country. Things feel different when it's just you, the sky, the dust, the heat, and the stars at night. A different sense of place and time.
